No. 9 Eagles Start 2024 With 1-0 Loss At No. 7 Lakers

In a very early matchup between two top-10 teams in NCAA Division II women's soccer, No. 9-ranked Ashland University lost at No. 7 Grand Valley State, 1-0, on Thursday (Sept. 5) afternoon.

The game was the 2024 season-opener for both sides.

Thursday's lone goal came early in the second half, as, in the 47th minute, the Lakers' Emma Chudik scored on an assist from Sarah Fromm.

…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • The Lakers had an 11-7 shots advantage, while the Eagles out corner-kicked Grand Valley by a 6-3 count.
  • Senior goalkeeper Maddie Dolenga made two saves in the first half to open 2024, while fifth-year Mackenzie Simon (0-1) made two stops in the second half.
  • Each of the last three meetings between AU and GVSU have ended up 1-0 – Aug. 31, 2023 in an Eagle win, and Dec. 1, 2023 and Thursday in Laker victories. Before that, the two sides hadn't played to a 1-0 final since Oct. 16, 2005 (Ashland home win).
