In a very early matchup between two top-10 teams in NCAA Division II women's soccer, No. 9-ranked Ashland University lost at No. 7 Grand Valley State, 1-0, on Thursday (Sept. 5) afternoon.

Thursday's lone goal came early in the second half, as, in the 47
th minute, the Lakers' Emma Chudik scored on an assist from Sarah Fromm.

- The Lakers had an 11-7 shots advantage, while the Eagles out corner-kicked Grand Valley by a 6-3 count.
- Senior goalkeeper Maddie Dolenga made two saves in the first half to open 2024, while fifth-year Mackenzie Simon (0-1) made two stops in the second half.
- Each of the last three meetings between AU and GVSU have ended up 1-0 – Aug. 31, 2023 in an Eagle win, and Dec. 1, 2023 and Thursday in Laker victories. Before that, the two sides hadn't played to a 1-0 final since Oct. 16, 2005 (Ashland home win).
