Showing the resiliency of a veteran squad on Friday (Sept. 20) night, Ashland University's volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 sets deficit to topple Tiffin, 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-17, 15-13), at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium.
Â
The Eagles are 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while the Dragons are 6-4, 1-1.
Â
"A lot of resilience for this team," said Ashland head coach
Katie Kuhn. "All the credit to Tiffin. They came in with a really good game plan. We were just able to make some of the right plays at the right time.
Â
"Just really proud of how our girls just continued to fight the entire night long."
Â
Friday night's victory was Ashland's third in a row vs. Tiffin, and eighth in the last 11 meetings in the series.
Â
During the course of the comeback, sophomore libero
Abbey Queen recorded 37 digs – the second-most in a match in Eagle volleyball history.
Â
"We just came together as a team, and just went over what the standard of AU VB was," Queen said. "Coming out and just being able to play my game, it's really nice."
Â
Queen helped the Eagles keep the Dragons to a -.026 hitting percentage in the fourth set to force the fifth and deciding one.
Â
"She did a really nice job," Kuhn said. "We've moved her around a little bit, to play both middle back and left back, and she's just embraced that. Just really proud of the growth she's made over the last few weeks."
Â
ANOTHER BALANCED OFFENSIVE ATTACK…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
- Three Eagles finished with double-digit kills – freshman outside hitter Sara Krizsa (17), freshman outside Samantha Young (15), and senior right-side hitter GraceAnn Hartman (14).
- "Very proud of the outsides and what they did tonight," said Kuhn.
- Sophomore setter Kylee Urban, the two-time defending Great Midwest East Division Athlete of the Week, racked up 47 assists, five kills and eight digs.
