It had been a while since Ashland University's women's soccer team had defeated Findlay – and the Eagles knew it.
On Thursday (Sept. 19) night at Ferguson Field, No. 11-ranked Ashland topped the Oilers, 1-0, to begin 2024 Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Eagles are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, and UF is 0-2-2, 0-1.
"It's a statement game in the conference," said Ashland head coach
Cayleb Paulino. "There's things that went our way, things that didn't, and I loved the response from the group."
Each of the previous three meetings between the Eagles and Oilers ended in ties, and Ashland was 1-0-4 in the previous five match-ups in the series.
A scoreless tie was broken in the 54
th minute when junior forward
Dani Hicks potted a rebound for her team-leading third goal of 2024.
"We keep talking about big players stepping up in big moments," Paulino said. "Dani has definitely embraced that role."
Said Hicks, "I'm just so proud of how far our team has come this year, and I'm just so excited to see how this takes us. I think we wanted to put a few in the back, and I'm glad we got one."
THREE CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
- The goalkeeper combination of senior Maddie Dolenga and fifth-year Mackenzie Simon recorded a third consecutive shutout on Thursday night. Dolenga had one save in playing the first half, then Simon stopped two shots in playing the second half.
- "Unbelievable job defensively by the group," Paulino said. "That's the one thing that we are getting better at, which is crazy to think about, what we did last year (19 clean sheets). We're making things difficult, even when they're wide-open and they get a shot."
- Of the game's 10 corner kicks, the Eagles had nine of them. AU also had a decided 17-6 shots advantage.
- Ashland played in its 300th all-time regular-season conference game on Thursday night, between the Great Midwest and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (191-80-29, .685).
