In the first two meetings of the 2023-24 season, the No. 1-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team topped Findlay 81-32 on the road and 72-67 at home.
On Tuesday (March 5) night at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium, in a 2024 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal, the final score lurched closer to the former than the latter for most of the contest.
With a 66-44 victory on Tuesday, the Eagles improved to 28-1 following a 13
th consecutive win over Findlay (14-15). The triumph also was AU's 20
th in a row, 65
th in the last 66 games, and the 50
th straight in Great Midwest play, tournaments included.
"I thought our team responded really well defensively, to an opponent we played three days ago," said Ashland head coach
Kari Pickens. "We came out and secured the first of hopefully many wins this postseason."
After an early 6-6 tie, the Eagles ripped off 13 points in a row to go up 19-6. The end of the first quarter saw Ashland leading 26-8 – thanks in large part to a 6-for-10 effort from the 3-point line.
Back-to-back triples from senior guard
Macy Spielman not only gave the Eagles eight in the first 12 minutes, but it put AU on top, 32-9. That helped the Eagles go into the locker room with a 40-15 lead.
In those first 20 minutes, not only did Ashland hit 10 treys, it also kept Findlay to 6-of-21 shooting from the floor and dished off 13 assists on 15 field goals.
A low-scoring third quarter saw the Eagles lead 54-26 at the end of it, and they went on to victory from there.
POST-GAME NUGGETS
- Spielman led the Eagles with a dozen points on a career-high four 3-pointers, and fifth-year forward Annie Roshak added 11 points.
- "Macy played outstanding. She played with a ton of confidence," said Pickens.
- For the 15th consecutive game, Ashland allowed 44.4 percent from the field or less, yielding 32.0 percent to the Oilers.
- "I was really proud of our defense today," Pickens said. "For the most part, I thought we took a ton away of things they hurt us on three days ago."
- Ashland also had 20 assists on 23 made field goals.
- The Eagles move to 135-4 all-time as the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II, and 324-13 as a ranked team in D-II.
