The No. 14-ranked Ashland University baseball team took both ends of Sunday's (March 24) doubleheader from Lake Erie at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, 7-1 and 6-3, to win three of four games in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference series.
Â
With the two victories, the Eagles improve to 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the Great Midwest, while the Storm moves to 11-12, 3-5.
Â
In a four-run bottom of the fourth inning in the opener, Ashland scored on a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk drawn by graduate shortstop
Devin Hukill, an RBI from junior center fielder
Cam Miller and a Storm error on the play.
Â
Then, in the bottom of the fifth, junior left fielder
Ian Sanders was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, then Hukill lifted a sacrifice fly, to make it a 6-0 contest.
Â
Lake Erie dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with a run, but the Eagles got that back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by junior third baseman
Jeremiah Cangelosi.
Â
In the nightcap, the Storm got out on top first with a run in the top of the first, but the Eagles responded with a quick four-spot in the bottom of the fifth – with the big blow being a bases-clearing double by sophomore left fielder
Ryan Shimek.
Â
Sophomore right fielder
Chris Franks' RBI single put AU ahead 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, then junior first baseman
Joey Bertani's run-scoring single in the sixth made it 6-1.
Â
Back-to-back solo home runs moved Lake Erie closer in the top of the seventh, but senior right-hander
Zac Common closed the door for his second save of the season – and for the Sunday sweep.
Â
