Ashland University's baseball team had the opportunity for the best 14-game start in program history on Sunday (March 17) at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, but a 6-1 lead after four innings turned into a 10-8, 10-inning loss to Davenport.
Â
The Eagles are 12-2 after having their nine-game winning streak snapped, and the Panthers are 4-15.
Â
Davenport struck first with an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-out RBI single by third baseman
Jeremiah Cangelosi, then a wild pitch.
Â
To start the bottom of the fourth, sophomore second baseman
Gavin Dobbels launched a towering solo home run to right-center field to increase the AU lead to 3-1. Graduate shortstop
Devin Hukill's RBI fielder's choice made it a 4-1 contest, another wild pitch pushed the lead to 5-1, and a passed ball made it 6-1.
Â
The Panthers responded in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout to cut their deficit to 6-2, then added three more runs in the top of the sixth to continue to slice into AU's lead at 6-5.
Â
Cangelosi put the Eagles back up by two at 7-5 with a lead-off solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, then junior left fielder
Ian Sanders gave AU another insurance run with a sac fly.
Â
Davenport did not go away, however, and scored twice in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game once again at 8-7. A single run in the ninth tied the score at 8, then two more tallies in the 10
th put the Panthers ahead 10-8.
