Eagle Men Reach Triple Figures In 2024-25 Home Opener

Ashland University's men's basketball team played its first game at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium in 2024-25 on Saturday (Nov. 16) night, moving to 2-0 on the young season after a 100-49 win over Miami-Middletown (0-7).

The Eagles have started a season 2-0 for the third time in the last four years.

"We got some good bench minutes, and are trying to develop those guys. We need to be able to play more guys," said Ashland head coach John Ellenwood. "I think we got that tonight."

Junior forward Maceo Williams was a perfect 13-of-13 from the field and finished with 28 points and six rebounds.

"That's focus if you go 13-for-13. That's ultimate focus," Ellenwood said. "Maceo's been outstanding to start this season. We need to keep that going. I'm proud of him, and his leadership is more important than 13-for-13 for me. He's hungry. He wants to be good."

The Eagles also received career-high point totals on Saturday night from redshirt sophomore wings Aden Gregory (19 points) and Carter Valentine (13 points).

Ellenwood said of Gregory, "Great player, very smart, very high IQ. And only getting better every game, and I'm proud of him. He's getting more comfortable now."

Of Valentine, Ellenwood said, "Carter played really well. He redshirted, had a year of development, and now he's starting to figure it out."

DAVIS HITS DOUBLE FIGURES…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • Sophomore guard Cooper Davis finished with a dozen points on four 3-point field goals.
  • The Eagles shot 60.9 percent from the field, out-rebounded the ThunderHawks 41-30, and recorded 17 steals on 23 Middletown turnovers.
  • "We've just got to keep getting better," said Ellenwood, "and focus on how do we take care of the ball a little bit better."
