On Saturday (Jan. 20) afternoon at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium, the Ashland University men's basketball team lost 74-44 to Cedarville.
The Eagles are 12-5 overall and 6-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and the Yellow Jackets are 13-5, 7-1.
Trailing 12-6 early, Ashland began the task of cutting into the deficit. The Eagles got it back to a two-point game, but the Yellow Jackets ran off six straight points to go up 20-12 and force an Ashland timeout.
The AU counter came in the form of a 7-0 run to get to within a point, but the back-and-forth continued with Cedarville running off seven in a row itself. A low-scoring first half ended with the Yellow Jackets leading 27-19, as both teams shot around 30 percent from the field (Ashland 32.0, Cedarville 31.4).
Ashland's scoring drought of nearly seven minutes ended early in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away at 34-23, then to 39-27 when the Eagles stopped play.
Cedarville kept going, and the lead was 57-37 inside of the 10-minute mark.
POST-GAME NUGGETS
- Sophomore forward Maceo Williams led AU with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, and paced the Eagles with eight rebounds. Over the last three games, Williams has made 25-of-35 (71.4 percent) from the field.
- Junior guard Trevell Adams added a dozen points.
- Ashland narrowly missed making it seven straight games keeping an opponent to 44.4 percent from the field or less, as Cedarville hit 44.8 percent.
