No. 2 Eagle Women Earn Second Straight League Rout, Win 35th Straight On The Road

A game of long runs for the No. 2-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team resulted in an 81-32 win at Findlay on Saturday (Jan. 13) afternoon.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference-leading Eagles improve to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the league. Ashland extends its NCAA Division II-record win streak of 35 in road games, and now has won 39 road/neutral-site games in a row and 36 Great Midwest contests consecutively, including the tournament.

Ashland's 32 points allowed are the fewest in a game since yielding 20 against Malone during the 1983-84 season, and it is the lowest point total for a Findlay women's basketball team in a game all-time.

In the victory, fifth-year forward Annie Roshak became just the fourth player in program history to record at least 2,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career, joining Laina Snyder, Andi Daugherty and Jodi Johnson. With 13 points and nine rebounds on Saturday, Roshak has 2,076 career points and 708 career boards.

A slow offensive start by both teams resulted in a 6-5 Findlay (6-9, 2-5) lead at the first-quarter media timeout. Ashland took a 7-6 lead and didn't look back, as a 10-0 run helped the Eagles to a 15-8 advantage through the game's first 10 minutes.

Thanks to another lengthy Ashland run – this one of the 13-0 variety over nearly eight minutes – the Eagles went into halftime leading 38-14. The defense was the catalyst for AU in the initial two quarters, keeping the Oilers to 21.7 percent from the field and 0-of-7 from 3-point range, and forcing nine turnovers (resulting in 14 points).

Yet another Eagle run in the third quarter, 26-0 to end the period, helped Ashland to a 66-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • In addition to Roshak, double-digit scoring Eagles were senior guard Macy Spielman (game-high 15 points, third straight game with 10 or more points of the bench), senior forward Hayley Smith (12 points, nine rebounds, career-high-tying five assists, two blocks), junior forward Zoe Miller (11 points, seven rebounds, two steals), and senior guard Savaya Brockington (10 points, four rebounds).
  • The Eagles had a 48-32 rebounding advantage, made 16-of-18 from the free-throw line, and turned 23 Oiler turnovers into 30 points.
  • Ashland has won 11 consecutive games against Findlay.
  • The Eagles have won at least 14 games in each of the last 21 seasons (2003-04-current).
  • Ashland is 310-19 all-time as a ranked team in NCAA Division II, and 58-3 all-time as the No. 2-ranked squad in D-II.
