No. 1 AU Women Blank Pioneers To Begin Great Midwest Play

In the program's first-ever game as the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Ashland University's women's soccer team defeated Malone on the road, 3-0, on Saturday (Sept. 16) night.
 
The Eagles are 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and the Pioneers are 4-1, 1-1.
 
Ashland has won each of the first five games of a season for the first time since 2015.
 
NOTABLES
  • Following a scoreless first half, the Eagles broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when sophomore forward Dani Hicks scored her third goal of the season on a feed from junior midfielder Merrik Mihalek (second assist of the season).
  • Ashland's insurance goals came from senior forward Allison King in the 70th minute – her first as an Eagle – on a pass from Hicks for her first helper of the campaign, and from Mihalek in the 76th minute for her third goal of 2023, unassisted.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon made two saves, as she and the Eagle defense turned in their fourth clean sheet in five games.
  • The Eagles took 11 of the game's 15 shots, and eight of the game's 10 corner kicks.

Ashland's women will travel to Trevecca Nazarene (1-3-1, 1-0-1) on Thursday (Sept. 21) at 8 p.m. East/7 p.m. Central.
