Elsesser Wins Men’s High Jump, Long Jump On Great Midwest Day 2

On Day 2 of the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday (May 4) at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex and Ferguson Field, Ashland University fifth-year Storm Elsesser had, to say the least, a pretty good day.

Not only did Elsesser win the men's high jump and improved his chances to go to the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships, May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colo., but later in the day, he also won the men's long jump with a new provo. Elsesser's top mark on Thursday in the high jump was 2.09 meters/6-feet-10¼, and his best showing in the long jump was 7.36 meters/24-feet-1¾.

Taking third place in the men's high jump for AU was freshman Jaycob Kolleda, who also finished with an improved provisional at 2.05 meters/6-feet-8¾.

NOTABLES
  • Taking fourth place on Thursday were junior Wyatt Cory in the men's decathlon (5,916 points) and sophomore Sarah Masuoka in the women's pole vault (3.80 meters/12-feet-5½).
  • Sophomore Kelsey Kinsley took fifth in the women's shot put at 14.60 meters/47-feet-10¾, while junior Kaylin Martin was sixth in the women's long jump at 5.51 meters/18-feet-1.
  • Junior Cole LaRoche was seventh in the men's shot put (16.11 meters/52-feet-10¼), sophomore Caden Morris was seventh in the men's long jump (7.07 meters/23-feet-2¼), sophomore Jordan Hampton finished eighth in the women's heptathlon (3,711 points), and junior Emma Liberatore is eighth in the women's long jump (5.45 meters/17-feet-10½).
  • Ashland's men are in fifth place with 37 points through two days, while AU's women also are fifth with 31 points.

QUOTABLES
  • "It feels amazing. It's been a long time coming," Elsesser said following the high jump victory. "My first year winning a conference championship, and I got to do it outdoor and indoor. It's a phenomenal feeling."
  • "I was looking to hit that last bar, 6-11, to make it set that I am in for nationals, but I'm sitting tied for 18th right now," said Elsesser. "I'm going to go to a last-chance meet and hopefully hit that mark."
