Beginning a key Great Midwest Athletic Conference North Division series on Sunday (April 23) at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, Ashland University's baseball team lost 9-0 and 7-1 decisions to Northwood.
The Timberwolves continue to lead the North at 29-12 overall and 20-2 in the Great Midwest, while the Eagles are 26-13, 16-6. Ashland maintains its spot in second place in the North, one game ahead of third-place Walsh (21-16, 15-7).
Northwood jumped on top with a run in the top of the second inning in Game 1, then added three runs in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. The Timberwolves' fifth run came in the seventh, and their sixth and seventh in the eighth. Northwood added two more runs in the ninth.
Game 2 saw the scoreboard unchanged until the top of the fifth, when the Timberwolves scored three times. Northwood scored two more in the sixth, and two more in the seventh.
Ashland's run on Sunday came in the bottom of the seventh, when sophomore shortstop
Jeremiah Cangelosi hit a solo home run.
NOTABLES
- In Game 1, sophomore left-handed pitcher Brendan Beaver (5-1) took his first loss at AU, going seven innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and two walks and striking out five. Sophomore first baseman Sam Witt was 2-for-4.
- Game 2 saw senior right-hander Josh Meyer (3-3) yield seven hits, five runs and a walk and whiff five in six innings.
