Women’s Lacrosse Wins Fifth Straight With Record-Setting Defensive Effort

Ashland University's women's lacrosse team continues to set new standards, doing so again in a 14-1 win on Thursday (April 20) against Tiffin at Ferguson Field.

The Eagles are 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, a half-game behind Walsh for first place in the league. The overall win total is a program standard, as is the five-game winning streak. The one goal allowed also is a new program best for a single game.

Tiffin is 5-10, 1-5.

NOTABLES
  • The majority of the Eagles' offense on Thursday came from their three primary sources – freshman attacker Rachel Crumbacher (four goals, two assists), senior attacker Cassady Becker (five goals, one assist) and fifth-year midfielder Natalie Sonntag (four goals, one assist).
  • Crumbacher now has 26 assists on the season, tying Renee Ruppert (2019) for the most in a season in program history.
  • Senior goalkeeper Jillian Rekulak made three saves in the record-setting victory, dropping her season goals-against average to 9.94.
  • Ashland had 37 shots to Tiffin's nine, the Eagles forced 31 turnovers, and AU was 17-for-17 on clear attempts.

QUOTABLES
  • "We did stress today that this game was prepping us for the last couple games of the season," said Ashland head coach Lauren Simko. "That defensive unit, they do a phenomenal job. They are all on the same page. They all connect so well. They definitely should be proud of themselves."
  • "Rachel had some beautiful shots today," Simko noted.
  • Said junior defender Bri Doctor, "Defense has worked really hard this season. We've made a lot of progress, and it's amazing to see."
  • "It's crazy, coming from being on the bench to on the field this year," Doctor said. "I'm so glad to be a part of it, and the girls, they're just great. We work so well together."
