Ashland University's women's lacrosse team used five consecutive second-half goals and strong defense to snap a five-game losing streak and defeat Daemen, 10-9, on Sunday (March 19) afternoon at Ferguson Field.
The Eagles are 3-5, as are the Wildcats.
Ashland trailed 6-2, 7-3 and 8-5 prior to coming back for the victory.
NOTABLES
- Playing a second straight game without injured senior attacker Cassady Becker, Ashland received four goals and an assist from freshman attacker Rachel Crumbacher, three goals from fifth-year midfielder Natalie Sonntag, and two goals and three assists from fifth-year attacker Isabelle Pisani.
- Senior goalkeeper Jillian Rekulak, facing 19 Daemen free-position attempts, stood tall and made 12 saves in the victory.
QUOTABLES
- "Just realizing that we're not losing this game," said Ashland head coach Lauren Simko about the difference after trailing 8-5. "Jill, once again, she was a rock back there for us. We definitely put the ball on the line way too many times today. If it wasn't for Jill today, that would have been a much different score."
- "We've been working hard for this," Sonntag said. "I think today, it finally clicked. When we made mistakes, we worked hard to fix them. That really showed. We've got to keep composure, and take this win and run with it."
- "Today really shows our perseverance as a team," Rekulak said. "Not one of us put our heads down – we kept fighting, we kept going. The girls have my back all the time, so when they are put on the line, it's just about hard work and effort and pushing through."
