On Friday (March 10), Ashland University's softball team finished the annual Florida spring break trip with a 1-1 day, losing to Missouri-St. Louis (10-2 in five innings) and defeating Lock Haven (10-4) – scoring a season-high amount of runs in the last game of the trip.
Against UMSL, the Eagles led 1-0 thanks to a run in the top of the third inning when senior left fielder
Kaitlyn Carney collected an RBI single. The Tritons scored three runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth, and Ashland's second run came in the fifth when senior third baseman
Hailey Struckman rapped an RBI double.
The win against the Bald Eagles was highlighted by a first-inning grand slam from sophomore designated player
Cassidy Shaffer. Ashland went on to score all 10 runs in the first three innings – five in the first, three in the second and two in the third.
NOTABLES
- In the game against UMSL, Carney was 2-for3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Senior pitcher Josie Duncan (1-4) allowed nine hits, six runs and three walks and struck out one in 4 1/3 innings.
- The victory saw Shaffer go 2-for-2 with the slam, a run scored and five RBIs. Freshman pitcher Delaney Lis went the distance on a nine-hitter for the win, allowing four runs (three earned) and two walks and striking out two.
