Masuoka 2023 Light Giver Open

Track and Field Dusty Sloan, Ashland University Director of Athletic Communications

Pauley, Masuoka Highlight Eagles’ Day 1 Of Jud Logan Light Giver Open

The second Jud Logan Light Giver Open started on Friday (Feb. 3) at the Niss Athletic Center, and there were some standouts among the Ashland University competitors.

And what did first-year Eagle head coach A.G. Kruger like about the day? A lot.

"Just the energy, being here, being able to see kids compete where we train at," Kruger said, "Dan Niss giving us the opportunity to have this to compete in is absolutely amazing.

"Kids just came in and stayed loose and threw far, jumped far, jumped high, ran fast…it was just a lot of fun here."

Being at the meet named after Logan means a lot to Kruger, as does being the Eagles' head coach.

"It's not as simple as just being here as the head coach," he said. "It's be here and have these great kids to be here with, and that just makes all this easier. To be able to call this a job, I get to call this a job. This is ridiculous. This isn't a job, it's so much fun."

WHAT HAPPENED
  • In the women's pole vault, sophomore Sarah Masuoka improved upon her previous provisional mark for the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, March 10-11 in Virginia Beach, Va. Masuoka took second place on Friday with a top mark of 3.80 meters/12-feet-5½.
  • Fifth-year thrower Carrol Pauley set a new facility mark in the women's weight throw, winning with a top heave of 19.33 meters/63-feet-5.
  • "Right now, this time of year…let's keep on moving the bar up and keep on getting better as we go," Kruger said. "I start the day with like seven PRs in women's weight throw, because it started clicking. It catches fire."
