No. RV Eagle Men Outlast Bearcats, Ellenwood Ties Lyons For Most Coaching Wins In Program History

Former Ashland University men's basketball head coach Roger Lyons' 246th and final win as an Eagle came on Feb. 22, 2009.

More than 14 1/2 years later, current AU men's basketball head coach John Ellenwood earned his 246th win as the Eagles' mentor – a 66-62 win over Southwest Baptist on Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon at Cedarville – tying for the all-time program wins lead in the process. In his 15th season guiding AU, Ellenwood has an overall record of 246-151 (.620).

No. RV Ashland improves to 3-0 on the young season, while the Bearcats are 0-4. All three of the Eagles' wins so far in 2023-24 have come after trailing at halftime, and this is AU's first 3-0 start to a campaign since 2019-20.

Trailing 8-3 early, the Eagles ran off eight consecutive points to go on top 11-8 in a low-scoring first half. By halftime, however, Southwest Baptist had a 27-24 lead – thanks to the Bearcats hitting five 3-point field goals to Ashland's one.

Ashland was behind by a 30-26 count early in the second half before going on another run, this one of the 9-0 variety for a 35-30 lead. It was a 38-38 tie before the Eagles scored nine of the next 13 points for a five-point advantage at 47-42.

Junior guard Trevell Adams' jumper at the 6:47 mark of the second half gave Ashland the biggest lead for either team to that point at 53-47, and the Eagles kept the advantage the rest of the way.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • Fifth-year guard Brandon Haraway led all scorers with a season-high 26 points on 8-of-10 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
  • Senior center Victor Searls (11 points) and sophomore forward Maceo Williams (10 points) also finished in double-figure scoring.
  • Ashland turned the ball over just nine times on Saturday, and made 48.9 percent from the field.
  • There were eight lead changes and nine tie scores on Saturday.
