In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the No. 1-ranked Ashland University women's soccer team took a 3-0 decision from Thomas More on Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon at Ferguson Field.
The Eagles' second five-game win streak of the season moves them to 10-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and their 11-game start is their best since 2001 (also 10-0-1).
Thomas More is 2-7-2, 2-5-1.
NOTABLES
- In the last minute of the first half, junior midfielder Merrik Mihalek launched a 30-yard free kick into the back of the Thomas More net to give Ashland a 1-0 lead going into halftime. It was Mihalek's fourth goal of 2023.
- The Eagles picked up where they left off in the 50th minute, when sophomore forward Dani Hicks got her own rebound and scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Hicks then potted her second goal of the game and eighth of the season in the 67th minute – it is her second career collegiate brace.
- Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon made four saves for yet another clean sheet on Saturday – her seventh individually and eighth for the team. Simon's season goals-against average dropped to 0.28.
- Thomas More had an 11-9 shots advantage, and the Eagles took six of seven corner kicks in the contest.
