No. 1 AU Women Move To 21-0 After Road Win Over Malone

Playing its only game of the week on Thursday (Jan. 26) night in Canton, Ohio, the top-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team improved to 21-0 overall following a 76-37 win at Malone.

One of only two undefeated NCAA Division II women's basketball teams entering Thursday, the Eagles improved to 13-0 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Ashland extended its win streak away from home to 22 games, and its regular-season win streak to 25 games.

The Pioneers are 14-6, 8-4, following their eighth straight loss to the Eagles.

Ashland allowed a season-low point total, and the 28.6 percent Malone shot from the field was the second-lowest the Eagles have yielded in 2022-23.

The 37 points allowed are the fewest given up by Ashland since 34 against Lake Erie on Dec. 11, 2021.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Ashland rebounded from an early 5-2 deficit with seven straight points, and by the end of the first quarter, the Eagles led 20-7 thanks in part to seven Malone turnovers.
  • By halftime, Ashland's lead was 42-16, with fifth-year guard Hallie Heidemann, making her 100th career start as an Eagle, scoring 14 points and making all five shots from the field.
  • In those first 20 minutes, Ashland kept the Pioneers to 30.4 percent from the field, and forced a dozen turnovers, while making 60.7 percent overall and 6-of-12 from the 3-point arc itself.
  • Through three quarters, the Eagles boasted a 59-27 lead, and went on to victory from there.

THE WRAP-UP
  • Heidemann finished with a game-high 14 points, and sophomore forward Zoe Miller came off the bench for a dozen. Senior forward Annie Roshak went 4-for-4 from the field (nine points), and continues to pace NCAA Division II in field-goal percentage this season at 71.5.
  • The Eagles shot 54.7 percent from the field on Thursday night (better than their D-II-leading 53.1 coming in), were 40.9 percent from 3-point range (better than their D-II-leading 39.8 going in), and was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line (better than their D-II No. 2-ranked 81.7 percent coming in).
  • Defensively, AU kept the Pioneers to 23.5 percent from beyond the arc, and forced 24 turnovers – resulting in 22 Eagle points.
  • Ashland improved to 61-3 in January games since 2016.
