Two Goals In 45 Seconds Lift AU Men Past Storm On The Road

Two second-half goals in less than a minute lifted Ashland University's men's soccer team to a 3-2 win at Lake Erie on Saturday (Sept. 24) night.

Thanks to a third consecutive victory (all on the road), the Eagles move past the .500 mark at 4-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Storm is 1-6-2, 0-4-1.

In the 70th minute, freshman defender Francesco Chiappo scored his first collegiate goal on a feed from senior forward Haruki Kimura. Then, in the 71st minute, Kimura scored the game-winner on a penalty kick – his third goal of the fall and second on a PK.

Saturday night's win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Eagles against the Storm, as AU's last win in the series came on Sept. 28, 2012.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Storm wasted no time taking the lead, as, in the third minute, Teddy Baker found Conner Mautino for the early tiebreaker.
  • Ashland's first-half counter came in the form of the first Eagle goal for senior forward Floris Kluemper in the 32nd minute. Freshman defender David Schneider had the assist, his first collegiate helper.
  • Lake Erie would take a 2-1 lead into halftime when Mautino scored his second goal of the game from Tomas Fernandez – a goal which was scored in the 45th minute.

THE WRAP-UP
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Ty Bowden (4-3-1) made two saves to get the victory in net.
  • The Eagles outshot the Storm by a 13-10 count, and had seven of the eight corner kicks in the game.
  • AU and LEC combined for eight yellow cards on Saturday night.
  • Ashland has scored six goals during the three-game winning streak after just three goals during the 1-3-1 start.
