DETROIT, Mich. – On the second day of the 2022 NCAA Division II split Midwest Regional at Harwell Field on Friday (May 20) afternoon, Ashland University's baseball team saw its season come to an end following a 10-3 loss to host Wayne State.
The Eagles finish the spring at 35-21, with runner-up finishes in both the Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and tournament, and with their 17
th NCAA postseason appearance in head coach
John Schaly's 25 seasons at the helm. The Warriors continue in the postseason at 36-18.
WHAT HAPPENED
- The Warriors jumped on top, scoring once in the top of the second inning on an Eagle error following a single, but the Eagles wasted little time in taking their first lead. Senior center fielder Sebastian Fabik drove in two with a double in the bottom of the second to put AU on top.
- Wayne State returned serve in the top of the third, scoring twice on a single to go up 3-2, then added another run in the top of the fifth on a groundout for a 4-2 advantage.
- The Warriors continued to increase their advantage, posting a run in the top of the seventh to go up 5-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out, but couldn't push a run across.
- Five runs for Wayne State in the top of the ninth rounded out its scoring, then senior catcher Brady Cottom's last career at-bat in the bottom of the ninth was a solo homer to right center – his second round-tripper in as many days.
- Cottom was 3-for-4 with the homer, while Fabik was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Senior right-hander Jacob Harsany (7-5) gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and three walks and struck out six in five innings.
