After having to wait a day to open the 2022 season due to weather, Ashland University's softball team split its first two games of the new campaign on Saturday (Feb. 26) at the Blue Bridge Battle in Owensboro, Ky.
Â
The Eagles took a 2-0 decision against Quincy, then lost 4-1 to Illinois Springfield.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED
- In the season-opener against the Hawks, the Eagles scored the only runs they would need in the bottom of the second, as freshman first baseman Lily Rockwell and sophomore catcher Jordyn Severns each rapped RBI singles. Rockwell was 2-for-3 in the victory.
- The reason those were the only runs AU needed was because of the pitching of junior right-hander Josie Duncan, who authored a complete-game four-hit shutout. Duncan struck out five and walked two.
- Against Springfield, the difference was a four-spot for the Prairie Stars in the bottom of the second. The Eagles' lone run came in the top of the fifth, when Severns had an RBI single.
- Duncan pitched the second game, as well, yielding nine hits, four runs and two walks and whiffing four.
