TIFFIN, Ohio – It was Ashland University's men's soccer team's first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament game on Thursday (Nov. 3) afternoon.
It also was the Eagles' first Great Midwest Tournament win, as fifth-year forward
Haruki Kimura's second-half penalty kick and a clean sheet lifted AU to a 1-0 win against Lake Erie.
Ashland is 11-6-1, and will take on Cedarville (11-7-2) on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 1 p.m. at Tiffin for the league tournament title, and an automatic spot in the NCAA Division II postseason.
"It was a very, very tight game. Very tight," said Ashland head coach
Nick Roberts. "I said at halftime it was going to be a 1-nil game. You could see it was going that way, and it was."
The Storm is 10-7-3.
Thursday's semifinal was a rubber match between the Eagles and the Storm in 2022, and Saturday's championship game will be the same between the Eagles and the Yellow Jackets.
WHAT HAPPENED
- In the 29th minute, the Eagles survived a Storm long-range laser which hit the top left top corner post. Lake Erie out-shot AU in the first half by a 5-3 count, but the scoreboard was nil-nil going into the second 45 minutes.
- Then, in the 74th minute, a Storm foul in the goal box drawn by fifth-year left wing Oliver Whaley set up Kimura, AU's best penalty kicker, with a chance to take the lead. He shot bottom right to put the Eagles up 1-0 on his 10th goal of 2022, and sixth on a PK.
- "We knew that it was going to be a tough game," Kimura said. "We get through the first half, and in the second half, we knew we were going to have chances."
- "We said that at the beginning of the season," Roberts said, "the older guys had to step up, because we're so young. Haruki was very disappointed when we lost to Lake Erie last week, and I told him, 'Haruki, the story is not over.'"
THE WRAP-UP
- Sophomore goalkeeper Ty Bowden stopped three shots on Thursday for his sixth shutout of the fall.
- "It feels great, especially with a whole new group," Bowden said. "This is all we wanted from the beginning of the season. Now, we have a chance to win the conference tournament."
- Lake Erie out-shot Ashland by a 14-10 count, and Ashland had a slight 5-4 corner kicks advantage. The game featured 31 fouls between the two teams.
