Volleyball Loses Opening-Round Regional Match To Ferris State

On Thursday (Nov. 17) afternoon in Quincy, Ill., Ashland University's volleyball team lost a 3-1 (27-25, 21-15, 25-17, 25-19) decision to Ferris State in the first match of the 2022 NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament.
 
The Eagles, making their ninth NCAA postseason appearance in 19 years (2004-07, 2012-13, 2016, 2018 and 2022), see their season end at 23-9. The Bulldogs are 25-9.
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • The opening set saw Ashland take a 7-6 lead without recording a kill, then three straight Eagle points put them ahead 19-17, leading to a Bulldog timeout. Ferris State stopped the match with Ashland leading 23-21, then, with the Eagles up 24-22, the Bulldogs rallied to take the set.
  • Ashland took the lead in the second set at 5-4 and kept it the rest of the way to knot the match at 1-1. In the third set, Ferris took the lead at 11-10, but the Eagles rallied to tie at 16-all and 17-all before the Bulldogs scored the last eight points of the set to go up 2-1 in the match.
  • Set No. 4 was a back-and-forth affair, but the Bulldogs went on a 10-4 to end the set and the match.
 
THE WRAP-UP
  • Junior libero Katie Thompson had a match-high 34 digs, giving her 585 for the season – second-most in program history. Thompson also now has the three best dig matches in program history – 40 in 2021 and 34 twice in 2022.
  • Fifth-year outside hitter Erin Krupar had 13 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Makenna Belcher added a dozen kills. Fifth-year setter Zoey Peck ended with 41 assists, and senior defensive specialist Stephanie Smith (17) and Peck (14) each had double-digit digs.
  • Thursday's match featured 30 tie scores and 15 lead changes.
