AU Volleyball Sweeps At Home Again, Tops Panthers

A 2022 habit for Ashland University's volleyball team so far this season, it was another 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20) victory for the Eagles against Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Oct. 29) at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium.

Ashland's 18th sweep of the fall, it moves the team, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference South Division champions and receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division II coaches poll, to 22-6 overall and 15-0 in the conference. The Eagles have won 19 consecutive matches at home.

"When you have good leaders, have good leadership…you're focused on the now, on the present," said Ashland head coach Kevin Foeman. "I just think we're playing game to game, practice to practice, and just rolling with it."

The Panthers are 11-17, 6-9.

THE WRAP-UP
  • Sophomore right-side hitter GraceAnn Hartman was one of the leaders for AU on Saturday afternoon, finishing with 11 kills, a .400 hitting percentage and four block assists.
  • "We use her a lot, so she allows us to have a balanced offense," Foeman said. "She's a much better blocker than she was last year. She's just a good player, and we expected that."
  • Fifth-year setter Zoey Peck collected 32 assists, as the Eagles hit .302 in the match.
  • "It's been a really exciting year," Hartman said. "My body is used to playing a lot more. That helps during games. Zoey was giving me great sets, the middle block was helping me a lot, and it just felt really good."
  • "I thought Zoey set really smart this weekend," said Foeman.
  • Defensively, junior libero Katie Thompson ended with 16 digs, and fifth-year outside hitter Erin Krupar finished with 10 digs.
  • Ashland is 13-1 all-time vs. the Panthers.
  • The Eagles' largest home Saturday crowd of the year came to the court to watch the victory.
  • "Volleyball is a great sport," Foeman said. "I think people need to understand how fun it is to watch, and this team is good, and it deserves to have full houses."
  • Hartman said, "I love having a crowd. The energy is better. We want more fans."
