The Ashland University baseball team got a solid pitching performance, but the offense was not able to add to its lead as the Eagles fell to Grand Valley State, 3-1, on Sunday (May 9) afternoon in the series finale.
The Eagles (19-16, 14-10 GLIAC) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by junior
Dillan Smith in the fourth inning, but they managed only two hits over the final five innings.
Junior right-hander
Jacob Harsany got the start for the Eagles and kept the Lakers (17-13, 13-7 GLIAC) at bay for the first five innings, limiting them to just two hits.
Grand Valley finally reached him for two runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Joe Laudont. The Lakers added an insurance run in the seventh to make it 3-1.
The Eagles brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but GVSU closer Jared Skubic induced a groundout to end the game for his third save of the series.
Harsany (3-1) suffered his first defeat of the season, giving up two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked four. Freshman
Jake Depperschmidt and junior
Tim Zeller each had scoreless relief outings.
Ben Thomas (3-2) earned the win in relief for the Lakers, tossing 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
Smith and sophomore
Seth Schroeder combined for four of Ashland's five hits, with both going 2-for-3 with a walk.
The Eagles will conclude the regular season next weekend, opening a four-game series against Saginaw Valley on Friday (May 14) at 3 p.m. at Donges Field.
