The Ashland University baseball team saw its comeback bid come up just short as Grand Valley State held on for a 5-4 win on Saturday (May 22) night in Lansing, Mich., eliminating the Eagles from the GLIAC Tournament.
The Eagles (24-19) trailed 4-0 before scoring twice in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by sophomore
Seth Schroeder and an error that led to another AU run with two outs.
Grand Valley State (24-14) scored an important insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Ashland again scored twice in the ninth, but was not able to tie the game or take the lead.
Juniors
Micah Allen and
Tim Zeller singled to start the inning and both scored on a double by senior
Logan Stoldt to make it 5-4. GVSU turned to Ben Thomas on the mound, who got two strikeouts and a lineout to strand the runner at second base and secure the win.
Senior left-hander
Josh Smith (2-5) got the start and suffered the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked one.
The Eagles committed four errors in the game.
Austin Brown (4-4) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) in 7 2/3 innings for the Lakers.
Stoldt led the Ashland offense, going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Zeller was 2-for-4 with two runs.
