The Ashland University baseball team led 2-0 through three innings, but Davenport scored in each of the last five frames to open a four-game series with a 10-5 win over the Eagles on Friday (April 9) afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch moved up to 10 a.m. in an attempt to avoid thunderstorms later in the day.
On Friday, the Eagles jumped out to their lead in the second inning as junior
Micah Allen led off with a walk and junior
Alex Whipple singled. Sophomore
Seth Schroeder then ripped a triple to the right-center field gap to plate the pair.
Junior right-hander
Josh Stover was in command through three innings, giving up just one hit and striking out a pair, but the Panthers (11-6, 2-3 GLIAC) got to him for a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game.
Davenport opened the game up with four in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead.
It was 7-2 by the time the Eagles scored again, getting three runs in the seventh with junior
Logan Moss scoring on an error and Allen and junior
Logan Stoldt contributing RBI hits.
Davenport got two runs back in the seventh and held the Eagles to just one hit in the final two innings.
Stover (1-4) suffered the defeat, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. James Kohl (3-0) earned the win for Davenport, tossing six innings and surrendering two runs with five strikeouts and four walks.
Whipple led the Eagles' offense with three hits while Schroeder went 2-for-4. Kamrin Markwardt had three doubles and drove in three runs for the Panthers.
