The Ashland University baseball team finished off yesterday's suspended game by facing just one batter, but faltered in the seventh inning of the series finale to Davenport as the teams split a four-game series in Grand Rapids this weekend.
The Eagles led Saturday's second game, 11-7, with two outs and two on for Davenport in the bottom of the ninth when it was suspended due to lightning. Junior right-hander
Perry Bewley finished the game on Sunday by striking out the only batter he faced to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Freshman
Jake Depperschmidt (3-0) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings of relief. He struck out seven batters in his outing.
In the regularly-scheduled game, the Eagles (9-10, 4-4 GLIAC) had a 4-2 lead going into the seventh inning, but the Panthers (12-8, 5-3 GLIAC) scored eight runs to take a 10-4 lead. The hosts went on to win by that margin.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout by senior
Garett Robberts and senior
Michael Rogers scoring on a balk.
The Panthers got their first hit off freshman starter
Justin Dyksma in the fourth and turned it into a run as they cut the deficit in half.
A two-run single in the sixth by sophomore
Seth Schroeder gave the Eagles a 4-1 lead before Davenport got one back in the bottom half.
Proceedings unraveled for the Eagles in the seventh as head coach
John Schaly turned to the bullpen with Dyksma over 100 pitches. The Panthers scored eight runs on six hits and an error as seven straight batters in a row reached base at one stretch.
Schroeder and junior
Mike Flemming led the Eagles with two hits apiece.
Dyksma did not factor in the decision, tossing six innings and giving up two runs on 10 hits in six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Senior left-hander
Josh Smith suffered the loss.
Freshman
Isaiah Seidel turned in an impressive outing, not allowing a baserunner in 1 2/3 relief innings.
Cal Djuraskovic earned the win for the Panthers with 6 1/3 relief innings.
The Eagles will return to Donges Field for the next two GLIAC series, starting Friday (April 16) at 3 p.m. against Northwood.
