On Sunday (Feb. 7) afternoon in Kenosha, Wis., Ashland University's women's basketball team fell to Parkside, 94-81, in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
Â
The Eagles return home at 6-5 overall and in the GLIAC, while the Rangers finish the weekend with the same marks.
Â
PARKSIDE SPRINTS OUT TO EARLY ADVANTAGE
Parkside shot out to a 6-0 lead 75 seconds into the game, leading to an Eagle timeout. That Ranger streak to start the game ended at 8-0, and after the first quarter came to an end, Parkside's advantage was 24-15.
Â
Ashland made 50 percent from the field in the opening period, but turned the ball over six times.
Â
RANGERS PULL AWAY FOR DOUBLE-DIGIT HALFTIME LEAD
Going into the locker room, the Rangers' lead was 12 points at 45-33, and the main reasons were hitting 60 percent from the field, and turning 13 Eagle turnovers into a dozen points.
Â
As was the case on Saturday (Feb. 6), both sophomore forward
Annie Roshak (13 points) and senior forward
Karlee Pireu (10) had double-digit points in the first half.
Â
EAGLES CUT DEFICIT TO NINE POINTS THROUGH THREE
Parkside led 59-44 with four minutes to go in the third quarter, but Ashland started to chip away at that deficit, and by the end of the stanza, it was nine points at 65-56.
Â
One of the late-third catalysts was sophomore guard
Sam Chable, who had five points, an assist and a steal.
Â
PARKSIDE PULLS AWAY IN FINAL QUARTER TO COMPLETE SWEEP
Ashland got the gap to seven points at 78-71 outside of the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter, but as was the case down the stretch on Saturday, Parkside had the answer. On Sunday, it was outscoring the Eagles 11-2 for a 16-point lead before an AU timeout in the final two minutes.
Â
THE SUMMARY
Roshak led the Eagles with 24 points, and Pireu was right behind with 22. Junior guard
Hallie Heidemann rounded out three AU players in double-digit scoring with 12 points.
Â
All five of Parkside's starters scored at least 10 points, paced by Alexis Vaughn with 26.
Â
NEXT UP – BACK HOME FOR TWO
Ashland returns to Kates Gymnasium for the final two scheduled regular-season home games of 2020-21 on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13), both at 4 p.m., vs. Purdue Northwest (3-8, 3-8).
