Ashland Women Lose At Timberwolves To Open GLIAC Weekend

Starting the next-to-last weekend of 2020-21 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season play on Friday (Feb. 19) night, Ashland University's women's basketball team lost at Northwood, 74-67.
 
With three regular-season games to go, the Eagles are 8-7 overall and in the GLIAC, and the Timberwolves are 10-5, 10-5.
 
Ashland led 19-10 early in the first quarter, then Northwood scored 10 points in a row to take the lead. With the Eagles leading 25-23 in the second period, the Timberwolves went on another run, this one 11-0, to pull away 34-25.
 
The first half of runs continued when Ashland scored seven straight points to make it a two-point contest at 34-32, but a 9-2 spurt helped Northwood take a 41-36 lead into the break.
 
Yet another T'Wolves run, the first eight points of the second half, put them ahead 49-36. Ashland chipped, chipped and chipped away at its deficit, getting the game to 60-58, but Northwood had one last run in it, this one 10-4, to put the win away.
 
Senior forward Karlee Pireu led Ashland's offense with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting, and with 1,050 career points, moves into 23rd on the program's all-time scoring list. Sophomore forward Annie Roshak posted 11 points, three rebounds, four assists and five blocked shots, while junior guard Erin Daniels came off the bench for 10 points and three helpers.
 
Northwood's Makenzie Todd led all scorers with 29 points, while hitting five 3-pointers and going 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
 
The Eagles outshot the Timberwolves, 47.3 to 44.6 percent, and made all 10 charity tosses, and turned 19 Northwood turnovers into 21 points. AU, however, had 17 turnovers of its own.
 
Ashland and Northwood will play again in Midland, Mich., on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 3 p.m.
