Box Score Ashland University's women's basketball team lost to Grand Valley State in both teams' Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Thursday (Dec. 4) night, 66-55, at Kates Gymnasium.
The Eagles now are 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers are 4-0, 1-0.
Ashland received another standout performance from freshman forward Andi Daugherty, this week's GLIAC South Division Player of the Week. Daugherty ended Thursday's game with career-highs in points (21), rebounds (20) and blocks (four), and shot 10-for-16 from the floor. It was Daugherty's third double-double in five collegiate games.
"I'm proud of our defense and our rebounding effort," said Ashland head coach Sue Ramsey. "I'm thrilled with the energy and effort from Andi Daugherty."
Sophomore forward Suzy Wollenhaupt and senior guard Taylor Woods each scored 10 points for the Eagles. Ashland boasted a 41-38 advantage on the boards.
Thursday's game was tied at 36 with 13:54 to go in the game, and Ashland trailed by just one point at 41-40 with 9:27 remaining, but the Lakers then went on a 10-0 run and didn't look back.
"It's frustrating to look around and know the talent is there," Ramsey said. "Grand Valley is a much-improved team. I thought we had a great game plan."
Ashland will continue its home GLIAC schedule on Saturday (Dec. 6) at 1 p.m. against Ferris State.
