Eagles Dig Deep For 3-2 Win Over Wildcats

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Ashland University women's volleyball team dug deep for another win this afternoon (Sept. 28), this time against the Wildcats of Northern Michigan University. The Eagles move to 3-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and 9-3 overall. The Wildcats are 9-4 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC play.

NMU won the first two sets of the match, 25-23, 25-11. The Eagles took the next three winning, 25-21, 25-18, 15-7.

Two Eagles posted double-doubles. Freshman Casey Clark had 13 kills and 14 digs. Redshirt freshman setter Shelly DeHenning recorded a double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs. Alli Cudworth added 18 kills. Senior Maureen Johnson had nine and seven block assists.

Lina Lopes had 14 kills and 13 digs for NMU. Sarah Hamilton ended the match with 12 kills.

In the first set the score was tied a total of 12 times. There were three lead changes over the set, until Northern Michigan ended it with the 25-23 advantage. It was all NMU in the second. The 'Cats took an early 7-2 lead and continued to pull away as the set continued. The Wildcats held the Eagles to  -.036 hitting percentage in the second set.

After trailing 0-2, AU took control of the match during the next three sets. The third set had six ties before the Eagles won 25-21. Ashland led NMU the entire fourth set, going up 7-3 early. AU kept the momentum going, eventually winning 25-18. Ashland took the early advantage again in set five with the score 8-3 at the midway point. The Eagles kept the ball rolling and ended the match with a kill by Cudworth.  AU held NMU to a .043 hitting percentage in the last three sets combined, and -.050 in set number five.

The Eagles return to Kates Gymnasium for a three game homestand starting Tuesday, Oct. 1 against Lake Erie at 7 p.m.
