Box Score The Ashland University volleyball team ran its winning streak to five matches on Saturday (Sept. 29) with a 3-0 victory at Saginaw Valley State. The red-hot Eagles have won 10 of their last 11 matches and are 13-2, 6-1 in the GLIAC. AU is in second place in the GLIAC South Division.
AU conquered the Cardinals, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23. The Eagles used a strong all-around attack to complete this road trip with a win. Senior outside hitter Brittany Snider (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) led all players in the match with 12 kills. She also had three service aces. Juniors Susie Jonas (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) and Baley Bernthisel (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego) had seven kills each. Junior outside hitter Kate Eckels (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) had six kills, nine digs and four aces.
While the Eagles pulled off a sweep, all three sets were close. In the first two sets, Ashland played much of the time with the lead, but the Cardinals (7-10/3-5) were always within striking distance. In the second set AU built a four-point advantage midway through the set and maintained that cushion for much of the rest of the way.
In the last set, the teams were tied at 22 when a kill by Sam Breault gave the Cards a 23-22 edge. AU tied the match on a kill by senior Crystal Elliott (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester). The Cardinals followed with a pair of attack errors and the Eagles had the win.
Next weekend, the Eagles visit Ferris State (Oct. 5) and Grand Valley State (Oct. 6).
