AT ASHLAND UNIVERSITY

  • Sloan is in his ninth year as Director of Athletic Communications after spending three years as Director of Sports Information.
  • Is responsible for all publicity concerning AU's 24 varsity sports, helping lead the athletic department's broadcasting efforts and updating goashlandeagles.com, statistics and records.
  • Led the 2023-24 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Sports Information Staff of the Year.
  • Successfully advocated for seven eventual USTFCCCA Division II Athlete Hall of Famers, 53 NCAA Division II Academic All-Americans through 2024-25, five members of the AFCA Good Works Team through the fall of 2024, two NCAA Elite 90 Award winners, two Great Midwest Athletic Conference Collegiate Achievement Award winners, a Great Midwest Scholar-Athlete of the Year and eight Great Midwest Elite 26 Award winners.
  • Successfully placed two student-athletes in Sports Illustrated’s Faces In The Crowd.
  • Served as the official media host for the 2017-18 and 2020 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's women's basketball Final Fours, the 2016 GLIAC women's and men's basketball Final Fours, the 2016-18 and 2022-23 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional women's basketball tournaments, the 2019 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional 1 and Midwest Super Regional baseball tournaments, the 2021 and 2023-24 NCAA Division II women’s soccer split Midwest Regional tournaments, the 2022 NCAA Division II men's soccer split Midwest Regional tournament, the 2022-25 Great Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournaments, and the 2025 Great Midwest women's lacrosse tournament Final Four.
  • Represented the Eagles on the road at the 2021 D-II Outdoor Track & Field Nationals, three D-II women's basketball Elite Eights, six Midwest Regional baseball tournaments, four Midwest Regional women's hoops tourneys, and two D-II football road playoff games.
  • Has been chairman of the Ashland University Hall of Fame Committee since the beginning of 2018, has served on various athletic department search committees, and also has served on the university's Internet Security Committee, Archives and GLBA Committees.
  • Served on the Great Midwest’s Awards Committee from 2021-24.
  • Recognized by CoSIDA for being the Director of Athletic Communications for D-II national-championship teams in 2017 (women's basketball), 2019 (men's indoor track and field and men's outdoor track and field), 2021 (men’s indoor track and field) and 2023 (women's basketball).
  • Earned 11 CoSIDA Stabley Writing Contest regional awards.
  • Reconstructed and created record books for Ashland University athletics programs, and the athletic department at large.
  • Built the content for Ashland University’s new interactive Hall of Fame and Ashland University’s Room 100 interactive football history screen.
  • Served as the Midwest Region chair for the D2SIDA WBB poll during the 2020-21, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons.
  • As of the summer of 2025, is the second-longest-tenured Sports Information Director/Director of Athletic Communications in Ashland history, behind only Al King (21 years).
  • Prior to being brought on full-time, was contracted to do written football content for the AU’s Sports Information Office, which included content for game programs, goashlandeagles.com and weekly press releases, as well as online player bios. Also assisted with the game-day football statistics crew at the start of the 2014 season.
  • Worked in the AU sports information office as a student.

BEFORE ASHLAND UNIVERSITY

  • Is a 32-plus-year veteran of sports writing, in both print and online mediums.
  • Bulk of professional sports-writing experience (1993-2008) came in the sports department at his hometown newspaper, the Ashland Times-Gazette – first as a sports writer, then as sports editor.
  • Won three Associated Press awards while at the T-G.
  • Also worked as Chief Content Writer for the United Football League during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
PERSONAL
  • Age: 48
  • A 1999 Ashland University graduate and 1995 Ashland High School graduate.
  • Is one of only two people to serve both as Ashland University Sports Information Director and Times-Gazette sports editor, along with Chuck Mistovich.
  • Resides in Ashland with his wife of more than 17 years, Mandy. Mandy Sloan works as a Customer Service Representative at Clutch Transportation in Ashland.
