Eagles Show Vast Improvement At Michigan State

Of the five Ashland University cross country runners who competed in this year's and last year's Michigan State University Spartan Invitational, four improved on their times on Friday (Sept. 15) in East Lansing, Mich.

On the AU men's side, senior Tyler Lance led the way in 38th place of 282 runners who finished the 8K race. His time of 26:18 was 17 seconds better than the effort that earned him 107th in 2016.

Sophomore Kyle Shively (54th, 26:39) and junior Tyler Sievert (95th, 27:41) also improved on their results from last season.

For the women, junior Emily Schumaker led the way in 64th with a 6K time of 23:58. Sophomore Johannah Stefanek got 98th in 24:38, which is 38 seconds better than the mark that placed her 180th last year.

Twelve of the other 13 Eagle men who competed were freshmen. Freshman Cody Booth posted the best time of that group. His 27:38 was good enough for 94th place.

Of the other eight Ashland women who ran, six were freshmen. However, sophomore Haylee Zigan led that pack in 155th place with a 26:06 finish, and freshman Raechal Schoenberger (160th, 26:21) and freshman Lexi Butterbaugh (163rd, 26:28) followed closely behind.

AU's next meet is Sept. 29 at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville.
