The Ashland University volleyball team suffered a defeat on the second half of its road trip to the Upper Peninsula, falling to host Michigan Tech, 25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 25-14, on Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon in Houghton.
The Eagles (15-4, 7-2 GLIAC) split their two-match trip and will head into the Midwest Region Crossover with a three-game lead in the GLIAC South standings. AU will be the GLIAC's No. 4 seed in next week's Crossover behind Ferris State, Michigan Tech and Saginaw Valley.
On Saturday, the Eagles were nearly even with the Huskies (13-4, 8-1 GLIAC) in kills, 58-56, but committed 14 more hitting errors (26-12) in the match to supply much of the difference. AU hit .183 for the match while Michigan Tech hit at a .284 clip.
Senior Sophi Cudworth led the Eagles with 19 kills (.333) while redshirt-junior Brooke Peiffer added 18 kills (.154) and 16 digs for a double-double. They were the only two AU players to have double figure kill totals.
Olivia Ghormley led the Huskies with 23 kills (.426) and did not have a hitting error. Laura De Marchi had 53 assists for Michican Tech.
The schedule for the Midwest Region Crossover will be released in the next day or two. It will feature all teams from the GLIAC, Great Lakes Valley Conference and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and will take place at The Academy Volleyball Club in Indianapolis.
