Eagle Wrestlers Compete At Eastern Michigan Open

A few members of the Ashland University wrestling team kicked off the 2015-16 season at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 7).

Senior Michael Labry wrestled unattached and placed fourth at the 141-pound weight class in the tournament. He defeated Grand Valley State's Bobby Montney (Fall 3:45), Lake Erie College's Chayse Csongedi (Maj 11-2), and Ohio State's Sal Marandino (Dec 10-4).

Senior Joe Brandt finished fourth at 197.  He defeated Corey Beck of Edinboro (Dec 8-2), Fletcher Miller of Indiana University (Dec 8-5) and Matthew O'Hara of Ohio State. Brandt fell by a 9-4 decision to Kollin Moore of Ohio State in the semifinal round and medically withdrew from the third-place match.

Freshman Bret Romanzak wrestled unattached and won three matches at 157. He defeated Northern Illinois' Josh Davis in the prelims (Maj 10-0), and capped off a three-match win-streak against Zaal Zafari of Edinboro University. Romanzak was defeated in the third consolation round to Eastern Michigan's Zac Carson by a 6-5 decision.

Also competing at the event for the Eagles were Zeb BeamBobby Mason, Lawrance Dudgeon and Jared Pack. Wrestling unattached was Christian Price.

The Eagles will officially begin their season as a team next weekend at the Michigan State open (Nov. 15).
