In Division II wrestling, few assignments are more difficult than trying to win at Notre Dame.
The AU wrestling team, ranked 15th in the country, made the trip to Notre Dame on Wednesday (Dec. 4). AU got several impressive performances, but couldn't string together enough wins to upset the Falcons. Notre Dame, the nation's top-ranked team, emerged with a 24-14 win.
The loss leaves AU with a 3-1 record in dual meet action.
AU and Notre Dame were tied, 7-7 after the first four bouts of the night and after Kyle Burns won by major decision at 157 pounds, the Eagles were in front, 11-7. But Ashland won just one of the next five matchups and that gave the match to the Falcons.
At 133 pounds, sophomore Michael Labry improved to 15-1 with a 12-3 major decision over Marty Carlson. Labry is ranked third in the country.
Redshirt freshman Brent Fickel gave AU three points with a 6-3 triumph over Abel Avila at 149 pounds. Fickel is 16-2.
Burns followed with a 10-1 verdict over Kyle Koziel to give Ashland its only lead of the night. Burns is 8-2.
AU's final win came at 184 where Bryson Hall upped his record to 6-0. Hall was a 3-2 winner over Charles Mason.
At 197 pounds, AU's Joe Brandt lost for the first time this season. Brandonn Johnson survived against Brandt, 2-1. Brandt is 13-1 and ranked sixth in the nation.
