Softball Extends Win Streak To Six After Road Sweep

Ashland University's softball team didn't leave its winning formula behind in Florida.

Returning north for their first doubleheader after the annual Spring Break trip, the Eagles extended their winning streak to six games following 15-4 and 2-0 wins on Thursday (March 14) at Wheeling Jesuit. Ashland improves to 13-5, and is off to its best 18-game start to a season since 2015 (17-1).

Game 1 saw AU score its most single-game runs this season, and its most since April 9, 2016, in the opener vs. Lake Superior State (also 15).

Leading the 15-hit Eagle onslaught were junior designated player Dayna Denner (3-for-5, home run, double, two runs scored, four RBIs), junior second baseman Camille Pollutro (3-for-4, double, triple, home run, three runs scored, three RBIs), senior first baseman Kylie Asmus (2-for-5, triple, four RBIs), and sophomore left fielder Alli Hylton (2-for-3, home run, three runs scored, two RBIs).

Senior pitcher Hannah Stroe (6-3) was the beneficiary of that run support, going the distance on a nine-hitter. She allowed four runs and two walks, and struck out six.

Thursday's nightcap was a much different game, with the Eagles' only two runs coming in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out double by senior center fielder Erika Farst.

Sophomore pitcher Laney Jones (5-2) earned her second complete-game shutout of 2019, twirling a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Ashland will play on Saturday (March 16) in a doubleheader at Ohio Dominican at 2 and 4 p.m. The twinbill originally was supposed to be played at home at Brookside Park, but was moved to Columbus due to field conditions.
