AU Men Back In Win Column With 7-0 Victory

Ashland University's men's tennis team enjoyed their trip to the upper reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Friday (April 12), earning a 7-0 victory over Michigan Tech.

The Eagles (10-10 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) enjoyed all the spoils in the match, sweeping doubles and singles play.

At No. 1 doubles, the freshman tandem of Stuart Brdicka and Jordan Phelps won their match in a close 7-5 decision. The other two matches were not as close, as junior Priyank Soni and senior Stanislaw Grzeslo won in a 6-0 shutout. At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Colten Clark and Tche Kun Teng won 6-3.

The dominance for AU continued into singles.

Only one match went longer than two sets, and that was the No. 5 battle for Teng. He dropped the first set 5-7, then won the second convincingly, 6-1, and squeezed out Set 3, 10-6.

The other victories for the Eagles all were straight sets.

Soni won his No. 1 matchup 6-2, 6-2. Brdicka cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Phelps had a tough first set, winning 7-5, then won the clinching second set, 6-3. Clark won his first set at No. 4 easily, a 6-0 bagel, then, in the second set, he had to eke out a 7-6 victory to win in straight sets.

Grzeslo rounded things out at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-sets victory.

The Eagles have a quick turnaround, as they travel east to play Lake Superior State on Saturday (April 13) at 10 a.m.
