Sponseller Lauded As Great Midwest Co-Coach Of The Year

For the second time, Ashland University head wrestling coach Colt Sponseller has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference wrestling Coach of the Year.

As announced by the Great Midwest on Thursday (March 21) afternoon, Sponseller is the 2023-24 conference co-Coach of the Year, along with Lake Erie's Boomer Fechko. In 2020-21, Sponseller was the outright league Coach of the Year.

Sponseller guided the Eagles to their third Great Midwest championship in four years in January, outlasting Tiffin, 109 points to 102.5. Ashland is the first Great Midwest wrestling program to win three conference titles.

The 2023-24 Great Midwest first team also was revealed on Thursday, and four Eagles were recognized as the winners at their respective weight class at the Championships – sophomore Sevriano Garza at 165 pounds, sophomore Nate Barrett at 174 pounds, graduate Daniel Beemer at 184 pounds, and senior Walker Uhl at 197 pounds.
