Three Eagles Land Great Midwest Athlete Of The Week Honors

Three Ashland University student-athletes have been named Great Midwest Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, the conference announced on Monday (Feb. 5) afternoon.
  • Graduate 184-pounder Daniel Beemer is the latest Great Midwest wrestling Athlete of the Week, following another strong week in dual action. Beemer earned a pair of technical falls – 21-5 against Tiffin at home on Friday (Feb. 2) night, and 18-2 vs. Findlay on the road on Sunday (Feb. 4) afternoon. Beemer, the No. 2-ranked grappler at 184 in NCAA Division II, is 8-0 this season with a pin, four technical falls and three major decisions.
No. 19 Ashland wrestling will compete in a dual at Notre Dame College on Friday (Feb. 9) at 7 p.m.
  • Senior sprinter/hurdler T.J. Skinner earned Great Midwest men's indoor track and field Athlete of the Week honors. During the third Jud Logan Light Giver Open at the Niss Athletic Center over the weekend, Skinner won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 7.87 seconds – giving him an improved provisional mark for the 2024 NCAA Division II Championships, March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kan., and the fourth-best time in the event in D-II.
The No. 12-ranked men's indoor track and field team will go to the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday, and a meet at Spire on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10).
  • Sophomore point guard Simon Wheeler is the Great Midwest men's basketball Athlete of the Week following back-to-back games in which he averaged 30.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while making 64.3 percent from the field, all five 3-point attempts and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line. In the win on Saturday (Feb. 3) at Lake Erie, Wheeler scored a career-high-tying 39 points on 12-of-17 from the field and 14-of-19 from the free-throw line, and added three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Ashland men's basketball (15-6 overall, 9-5 Great Midwest) will play host to Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Feb. 10) at 3 p.m. at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium. It will be the Eagles' Youth Camp Day.
