After the first day of the 45
th Annual Midwest Classic on Saturday (Dec. 14) in Indianapolis, Ind., two Ashland University wrestlers remained in the winners' bracket.
At 141 pounds, freshman
Brock Durbin, ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II, won two matches after a first-round bye. Durbin topped Minot State's Ethan Wonser, 2-0, then defeated Pitt-Johnstown's Mason Myers, ranked No. 9 in D-II, 2-1.
Junior 165-pounder
Nate Barrett, ranked No. 10 in the nation, also went 2-0 on Saturday after a first-round bye – earning a 2-1 sudden victory over Colorado Mesa's Alexander Holguin, then an 11-1 major decision over UNC Pembroke's William Lowery.
Three Eagles remain in the consolation bracket going into Day 2:
- Sophomore 125-pounder Luke Acuna, No. 14 in the country, went 3-1 with a pair of technical falls on the first day.
- Sophomore 184-pounder Peyton Lemon was 2-1.
- Senior 197-pounder Kaine Morris was 2-1 with two tech falls on Saturday.
Ashland is 20
th in the team standings with 31.5 points. Central Oklahoma leads with 51.5 points, Wisconsin-Parkside is second with 49.5 points and McKendree is third with 46 points.
