Birdie-Filled First 36 Holes Helps AU Men To Fifth-Place Start At Findlay

Ashland University's men's golf team came out strong to start the first 36 holes of Findlay's Doc Spragg Fall Invitational on Monday (Sept. 19), ending the day in fifth place in the 17-team field.
 
The Eagle men finished Monday at 288-284—572 – one of just six teams ending the day under par. Grand Valley State (282-277—559) leads the field, followed close behind by Missouri-St. Louis (277-283—560), Wayne State (282-278—560) and the host Oilers (283-278—561).
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • The highlight of the day came in Round 2, as sophomore Tyler Gillespie fired a 66 – not only a collegiate low round, but tied for the second-lowest round in the program since the start of 1996-97. Gillespie recorded an eagle, his fourth as an Eagle, on hole No. 4 in the second round, finished the day at 79-66—145, shot eight birdies on Monday, and is tied for 35th.
  • Ashland's most consistent player on Monday was senior Andrew Kolar, who, is tied for sixth individually after Day 1 at 5-under-par 69-70—139. Kolar ended the day with 11 birdies.
  • Senior Logan Thomas is tied for 46th after going 70-77—147, and recording eight birdies. Freshman Carter Mishler is tied for 50th at 74-74—148 and five birdies, and sophomore Matthew McMullen is tied for 61st after going 75-74—149 and ending with seven birdies.
 
UP NEXT
The third and final round in Findlay will be played on Tuesday (Sept. 20).
