Ashland University head volleyball coach Cass Dixon has announced that outside hitter Shannon Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich.) has signed a national letter of intent and will play for the Eagles beginning in the fall.
"Shannon's a great addition to our program," said Dixon. "She brings us size and ball control. She has great court vision and she can challenge for a spot on the outside right away."
Murdock was an all-league, all-region and all-state honorable mention selection as a junior and senior. She was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time team most valuable player. She ended her senior year with a school-record 599 kills. Lake Orion made it to the state championship game in 2011.
Murdock is the fourth and final member of Dixon's 2012 recruiting class. She joins setter Shelly DeHenning (Holland, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), libero Madison Haupricht (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and middle hitter Audrey Metzger (Dalton, Ohio).
"I knew we needed to bring in someone at each position," remarked Dixon. "We needed to add more depth. We've gone from 12 to 14 players. I looked for players who would be a good fit for our program. I was looking for players who believe in what we're trying to do here."
The Eagles were 15-13 last season, 12-7 in GLIAC action. AU finished fourth in the GLIAC and advanced to the GLIAC Final Four. The Eagles lose only two players from last year's team.
AU will open the 2012 season at the Truman State Days Inn Bulldog Invitational, Aug. 31, Sept. 1. The home opener is Friday, Sept. 21 against Michigan Tech.
