Eagles Fall Short Against The Storm In Home Dual

The 20th-ranked Ashland University wrestling team welcomed the No. 9-ranked Lake Erie Storm to Kates Gymnasium on Saturday night (Jan. 16).

The Eagles stood tough, but fell short in the end by a 22-15 final.

The night's most anticipated match featured Eagles senior Joe Brandt, the No. 3-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds, and Evan Rosborough, the No. 8-ranked wrestler from Lake Erie College. The match was within a point until Brandt issued a takedown late in the second period that put him up 3-0 at the time, and he never looked back.

Brandt won by a 4-1 decision and improved his record to 12-2 on the season.

Brandt Takedown

"Joe looked real sharp," said Ashland head coach Josh Hutchens. "He's wrestled that guy several times, that guy knows what Joe is going to do and he did a pretty good job in the first two periods, but right at the end of the second, Joe got the takedown."

Senior Zeb Beam defeated Christian Baughman at 157 by a 10-4 decision. Beam leveled his record at 8-8 on the season.

Redshirt junior Bobby Mason (141) also was victorious by a narrow 3-2 decision after getting the additional point for riding time over Joshua Davis from Lake Erie.

The Eagles now will turn their attention to top-ranked Notre Dame College. The Eagles will be in South Euclid, Ohio, on Wednesday (Jan. 20) to take on the Falcons. The dual will begin at 7 p.m.
