Eagle Wrestlers Begin Season at Mercyhurst Open

Ashland University wrestlers came away with an individual title and a pair of second-place showings Saturday (Nov. 8) at the season-opening Mercyhurst Open.

Senior Joe Brandt, who is redshirting this season and was wrestling unattached on Saturday, went 4-0 and won the 197-pound class. Brandt finished off the title with a 10-2 victory over Lake Erie's Evan Rosborough.

Junior Michael Labry finished second at 133 pounds after going 4-1. Labry had a pin and a major decision on his ledger. Junior Kurt Schaefer also was 4-1 with a major decision and a pin, and took second, his effort coming at 184 pounds.

Sophomore Brent Fickel was 5-1 and placed fourth at 149 pounds. All of Fickel's victories came through the losers' bracket, including a major decision to get into the third-place match.

The Eagles' next meet will be the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday, Nov. 15. Ashland's first home action will be Saturday, Nov. 22 in the Simonson Open.
