Eagles Show No Wear And Tear At Tiffin

Eagles Show No Wear And Tear At Tiffin

Plenty of professional sports arenas are accustomed to quick turnarounds.  When the schedule calls for a basketball game followed by a hockey game, the floor has to be flipped in a hurry.

Sometimes, in wrestling, a quick turnaround can cause a coach to hit the ceiling when his team falls through the floor after wrestling on two consecutive days.

There were no such worries for AU head coach Tim Dernlan and the AU wrestlers. Less than 24 hours after an emotional win at Findlay, the Eagles went on the road and downed Tiffin, 35-3 on Saturday (Feb. 2) evening.

The Eagles, ranked 19th in the nation, are 10-5 in dual meets. Their next meet is one of the biggest challenges of the season - a Friday night date (Feb. 8, 7 p.m.) against Notre Dame, ranked second in the country. That match will take place at Kates Gymnasium on Senior Night.

As for the match with Tiffin, AU won nine bouts. The Eagles had two major decisions and one pin. The pin came at 197 pounds where sophomore Joe Brandt stopped Alek Hughes. Brandt is ranked third in the nation. This was his sixth pin of the season.

Senior Dan Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Massillon Perry), who's been on a tear the last week, defeated D.J. Beauch, 12-2 at 149 pounds for one of the major decisions. The other came at 125 pounds where freshman Max Byrd (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) ranked seventh in the latest national rankings, clipped Stephen Pastor, 15-4. At 133 pounds, freshman Michael Labry (Twinsburg, Ohio) took a 7-4 decision from Mike Screptock to improve to 28-0.

Junior Jake Piatt (Medina, Ohio) completed a 2-0 weekend with a 5-0 decision over Alex Rivera at 165 pounds. At 157 pounds, rookie Zeb Beam (Holmesville, Ohio/Waynedale) bounced back from a 9-2 setback on Friday for a 3-2 win over Isaac Williams. Beam is 12-10.
