AU Wrestlers Drop 21-18 Decision To Golden Knights

The Ashland University wrestling team lost to Gannon on Saturday (Jan. 26), 21-18, in Erie, Pa.

The Eagles, ranked 12th in the nation in this week's Basford Division II national rankings, were coming off a 3-0 performance last Sunday at the Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Duals. In Gannon, the Eagles were facing an opponent that's given them fits recently (GU entered this match 3-0-1 against the Eagles in the last four meetings).

Even though the final result didn't go AU's way, there were some positives in this match. At 133 pounds, freshman Michael Labry (Twinsburg, Ohio), ranked fourth in the country, took a 3-2 decision from Jose Matos. Matos is ranked eighth in the nation and two years ago was an All-American at 125 pounds.

            Labry is 26-0.

At 149 pounds, senior Dan Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Massillon Perry) picked up his first pin of the season. Genetin pinned Michael Krysiak in 55 seconds.

Sophomore Joe Brandt (Versailles, Ohio), ranked third in the nation, improved to 25-2 with a 6-1 decision against Christopher Boyd at 197. In the final bout of the afternoon, at 285, junior Tyler Houska (Wadsworth, Ohio/Highland) won by medical forfeit over Charles Lear.

Ashland is 8-5 in dual meet action this season. Gannon is 2-3.

Next Friday (Feb. 1, 7 p.m.), Ashland will visit 11th-ranked Findlay.
